USRA Truck Series to kick off 2007 Season at San Antonio Speedway
San Antonio, TX (March 21, 2007) – The United States Racing Association (USRA) Truck Series – one of the most popular touring stock car series in Texas – will be firing up their 2007 season on Saturday, March 24, 2007, at the super-quick, high-banked, half-mile San Antonio Speedway oval – the fastest short track in Texas.
The always-competitive USRA Trucks, along with the Lone Star Legacy Series, will join forces with all four San Antonio Speedway local classes this weekend to give San Antonio Speedway fans an evening jam-packed with exciting, door-to-door short track racing.
The USRA Truck Series 50-lap feature event will pit full-size pickups battling door-to-door to get a jump on the rest as the quest for the coveted USRA 2007 championship gets underway.
Last season Steve Green of Marble Falls, TX, and Craig Roper of Vernon, TX, battled the entire season for supremacy with Green claiming the championship trophy by a mere 30 points. The hottest rookie in the series, Jody Buzbee of Waco, TX, claimed the third spot in the standings followed by Jim Albert of Lockhart, TX and Rusty Mirth of Austin.
Shawn Paul Lehman of Manchaca, the 2005 USRA Truck Series Champion is also expected to make a run for the championship and is expected to be in competition this Saturday. Lehman, who only raced in seven of the ten USRA Truck races last season but still finished ninth in the standings, is always a threat to win wherever he competes.
The Lone Star Legacy Series features 4-cylinder stock cars that are cut down versions of NASCAR Nextel Cup cars. Since they all are required to run the same four-cylinder engine, the racing is always at close quarters and quite frequently very intense.
San Antonio Speedway General Manager and USRA Truck Series Race Director Rick Day is expecting a good turnout of cars in all classes. “We’ve had some new teams register in all our classes over the off-season so we’re expecting a full field this Saturday. I think we’ll be seeing some strong competition in all classes, but especially in the Sportsman division.”
USRA Owner and CEO Terry Dickerson is eagerly anticipating the start of the 2007 USRA Truck Series season. “We didn’t make any rules changes over the winter, so we’re expecting the truck guys to come out in force. We heard that several teams have purchased the low cost “crate” engines that ran so well last season. To me, the truck put on a whale of a show for our fans.”
The weekend will get started on Friday with an open practice set for 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Grandstand admission for this practice session will be free for spectators.
On Saturday, the pit gates will open at 2:00 p.m. with practice sessions scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and qualifying set to take the green flag at 6:00 p.m. The racing action will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. with heat races for the SAS Grand Stocks, the SAS Road Runners and the SAS Sportsman division, followed by feature events the Grand Stocks (15 laps), the Lone Star Legacys (50 laps), the Road Runners (20 laps), the Sportsman (25 laps), the USRA Trucks (50 laps) and the fire breathing SAS Late Models (40 laps).
Grandstand admission for Saturday’s events is $12 for adults, $8 for Senior/Military/Student with ID, and $3 for Children 7-12. Children 6 and under are admitted free.
San Antonio Speedway is located 3.5 miles south of Loop 410 on Texas Highway 16 towards Poteet. For more information about San Antonio Speedway or the USRA, call SAS General Manager Rick Day at 210-827-4524 or call the SAS race hotline at 210-628-1499.
