Young, Cole and Shumaker Score Big at HMP Speedfest 07
Houston, TX (March 21, 2007) - With over 150 cars in the pits, dry but cool weather and a full grandstand co-owners Graham and David Baker got everything they hoped for to ensure the success of the Inaugural Speedfest 07 event at Houston Motorsports Park on St. Patrick’s Day night. The unique three-day event featured $50,000 in purse money, $ 3,000 given to lucky fans; a new Victory Lane elevated platform, and champagne and custom made helmets for each of the eight feature winners
The main event of the evening was the ASA Pro Late Model TXI Maximiser 125 which started fast and furious with long-time veteran Greg Davidson jumping out to an early lead. Starting in the second row in a field of 24 Late Models, Houston’s Jason Young chased down Davidson near the halfway mark and the two put on an exciting 4 lap side by side “racing and rubbing” spectacle that Houston fans won’t soon forget. Davidson, fighting to hold the top spot got caught in a melee on the front stretch, got turned around and ended up backing into the outside wall between corners 1 and 2 with Young grabbing the lead and the $5,000 win.
San Antonio’s Brandon Bendele finished a strong second with Beaumont’s Kirby Caldwell placing third for his best ever ASA HMP Pro Late Model finish in two years. Rounding out the top ten and finishing on the lead lap were T. Wade Welch, Brent Seeley, Kristin Bumbera, Eddy Wallace, Steven Davis, Jerry Schild, and Carl Smith.
While the TXI Maximiser 125 brought an exciting end to the 3 day weekend, Young’s victory also brought the luck of the Irish to a young Katy mother and her daughter who had a matching admission ticket number chosen in a random drawing corresponding to Young’s #27 which resulted in them winning $1,000 from Speedfest 07 co-organizer Luis Garcia. Garcia, President of Channel Safety and Supply, came up with idea and cash to fund the first ever “Be a Fan - Win A Grand” contest.
Two other race fans won $1,000 each when #14 James Cole took top honors in the PSF Fabricators 75 Pro Modified barnburner and #1 Derek Shumaker won both segments of the Thunder Roadster Apache Oil 70. The $12,500 purse and 31-qualifying car field were national records for a Thunder Roadster event, which drew drivers from California, Colorado, North Carolina and Texas.
Other race winners included James Huff in the HMP Stock Cars, Mark Merino in the Legends, Alex Hickham and Bailey Currey in the Bandeleros, and John Duchek and Sammy May in the Allison Legacy cars.
Racing resumes at HMP on March 31st with eight divisions competing for prize money and trophies. For more information, visit www.houstonmotorsportspark.com or call (281) 458-1972.
