New Wins Texas Stock Car Spectacular 75

By: Pat Mayberry

Kyle, TX (October 39, 2996) - Bobby Joe New is no stranger to victory circle and he made his third trip there this season Saturday night, winning the 10th Annual Texas Stock Car Spectacular 75 at Thunder Hill Raceway in Kyle, Texas. New was coming off a win in Houston last weekend and had very little work to do to his rocket ship to get ready. New was fast in practice all day and set second fast time in qualifying, just getting bet out by “2006 Texas Super Racing Series Rookie of the Year” Cody Smith. However, New drew well on the inversion and started on the outside of the front row.

As Smith and New brought the field around to take the green, Smith got a good jump and opened enough room for New to fall in quickly behind the second place car of Craig Sellman. The first of six cautions came out on lap two when Andy Wojtaszcyk had a solo spin. On the restart everyone fell into place quickly and on lap 13, Tommy Gural made a power move to get past the #00 of Beau Bukowski, who returned to the series for his first start of the season.

Lap 27 saw the second caution fly when Mike Cullen solo spun. On the restart Smith led New, Gural, Joe Aramendia and Bukowski while opening up a three or four car length lead at times. Smith clearly was the car to beat early in the race and with the series championship on the line between Smith and Gural, Smith was making an attempt to control his own destiny.

Laps 36 and 45 again saw cautions fly drew to solo spins by Wojaszcyk and Cullen. The trio of Smith, New and Gural continued to guide the field around the track for the next 21 laps when the caution again flew when Craig Sellman and David Snokhous tangled in turn 3.

On lap 70 the three leaders were nose to tail and both Gural and New were looking for a chance to make their move. New took a chance on lap 71 coming out of turn two and go inside Smith as they battled into turn three. Then the two cars touched and Smith got turned around and had a tire go down, forcing him to the pits. Gural saw what was about to happen in front of him and made a quick move high to avoid the collision.

Series officials ruled that since Smith went to the pits he had to restart at the back of the pack, effectively ending the seventeen year olds championship run and handing it to Gural as long as he finished the race. New was given his spot back with the ruling he had broken the plane and was entitled to the position.

As the green flew for the final time with four laps to go, New held the bottom forcing Gural to play it safe and settle for second. “Cody was fast tonight,” said New in the post race tech area. “We were just lying back letting him wear off some speed off his tires. We figured out anybody that fast would wear out some tires and sure enough, with about 10 – 12 laps to go he was slowing down in the turns. Our car just never seemed to slow down. I owe a lot of thanks to J.R. my crew chief. He can really make these cars run. We got back into this about three years ago and he is not only a great crew chief but a good friend. This season was lots of fun for us getting three wins. There are some good cars out here and we are just glad to come out and run with them. I need to thank my Dad, “Papa” who has been supporting me for forty something years in this game too. We’re just going to play it by ear and see what we do for next year.

Official results are being held due to some tech issues after the race in several cars. Hard Charger of the night was a tie between Leland Waddell and Chris Schild, who both improved their starting positions six positions. Cody Smith was named 2006 Rookie of the Year. Tommy Gural won the 2006 Texas Super Racing Series Championship.

The next stop for the Texas Super Racing Series will be the annual post season awards banquet. For banquet information please visit their web site at www.manracingpromotions.com.
