“TexasSpeedZone.Com Triple Threat” to Feature all Three USRA Touring Series at SAS
San Antonio, TX (August 15, 2006) - All three United States Racing Association (USRA) Touring Series – along with the Texas Pro Sedans – will be in action this Saturday, August 19, 2006, at San Antonio Speedway – the fastest half-mile paved oval in Texas - for the running of the “TexasSpeedZone.Com Triple Threat.”
USRA Owner and CEO Terry Dickerson is upping the prize money for this very special event featuring three of the top touring series in the Southwest and the always fun-to-watch Texas Pro Sedans.
“If anyone can win two of the three USRA features we will award that team a $2,000 bonus,” Dickerson said. “We’d love to have drivers try their luck in all three of our series. Maybe the bonus will encourage a few to give it a shot.”
The USRA Super Late Models will run a 125-lap feature event, the USRA Modifieds will tackle the SAS high-banked oval in a 75-lap feature while the highly-competitive USRA Trucks will test each other during a 50-lap main event.
Chris Davidson leads the USRA Super Late Model point standings by a slim 27 point margin over rookie Matt Merrell who earned the 2005 USRA Modified Series Rookie of the Year Award and made the jump to the USRA Super Late Models this year.
“I have just as good a chance as anyone to win the championship,” Merrell said. “We’ve been running good every time we hit the track, but I know Chris (Davidson) and Greg (Davidson) and Brandon (Bendele) and Casey (Smith) and Tommy (Grimes) are always tough at San Antonio. And you can’t count out John Kelly or Todd McLemore or Tuffy Hudson or Tommy Grothues either. Any one of them can win on any given night. I just try to run clean and put myself in a position to win at the end if I can.”
Area favorite Billy Becka from nearby La Vernia sits atop the USRA Modified points chart, but steady Bob Slezinsky is only 30 points behind while front-runner Mark Chrudimsky, defending USRA Modified champion Bruce Beddoe and 16 year-old rookie Trey Mitchell are all within 50 points.
“It was a real thrill to win my first USRA Modified race at San Antonio last time out,” the young Mitchell said. “I totally respect the drivers who run this series and it’s an honor to even be racing with them. I’m still learning the ropes, but I love to go fast and the Modifieds are really quick. I learn something from these guys every time I race.”
Steve Green, one of two three-time winners in the USRA Truck Series so far this season, leads a very strong contingent of race trucks to the half-mile paved track. Rookie Jody Buzbee has been the model of consistency all season, winning the season-opener at SAS in March and finishing near the front ever since.
A genuine rivalry has developed between Green and Craig Roper, who is the other three-time USRA feature winner this season, and race fans can anticipate some close, hard-fought racing between the pair this Saturday.
Also on the program is a 25-lap Texas Pro Sedan feature. The stock-appearing but highly-modified four-cylinder TPS cars provide fans with close racing throughout the field. TPS has been conducting stock car races for over 30 years and is one of the fastest-growing touring series in Texas - frequently boasting more than 20 cars in their starting lineup.
The speedway will be hosting a Test and Tune session for all classes on Friday, August, 18, 2006, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
On Saturday, the pits will open at 2:00 p.m. with practice sessions beginning at 3:00 p.m. Qualifying will take the green flag at 6 p.m. with racing getting under way 7:00 p.m.
San Antonio Speedway is located 3.5 miles south of Loop 410 on State Highway 16 South towards Poteet, near the new Toyota facility.
The spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m.
Admission is $20 for adults, $8 for Senior/Military with ID, $3 for children 7-12. Children 6 and under are free. Free Kids’ coupons are available at any Express Lube location.
