USRA Super Late Models Return to San Antonio Speedway Saturday
San Antonio, TX (July 4, 2006) – The fastest short-track stock cars in the Southwest – the United States Racing Association (USRA) Super Late Models – will be in action at San Antonio Speedway this Saturday evening in the “Magnum Trailers 125.”
USRA Super Late Model driver Casey Smith will be gunning for his third checkered flag in-a-row at the super fast, half-mile, high-banked SAS oval, but will face serious challenges from the father and son team of Greg and Chris Davidson, Todd McClemore, rookie Matt Merrell, perennial front-runner Brandon Bendele, T. Wade Welch and a host of USRA drivers capable of winning on any given night.
“I’m going to do everything I can to win this weekend,” Smith said. “My team has given me an awesome car and we won the first two USRA races at San Antonio this year with it. And we’ve done some things to the car that will make it even better for this one. We’re very optimistic.”
However, Chris Davidson, winner of the first leg of the USRA Texas Two-Step Nationals at Texas Motor Speedway last month, believes he has a good shot at taking the checkered this time out.
“We have a pretty good track record at San Antonio, but it’s been a while since I’ve won a race there. Hopefully we learned enough the last time we ran there to be good enough to accomplish our goal of ending up in victory circle.”
USRA Race Director Rick Day is predicting a good field of Super Late Models.
“We’ve had a lot of interest in this event from all over,” Day said on Tuesday. “We don’t require a pre-entry, so it’s hard to predict exactly who will be racing with us, but we should have a full field of top-notch cars for this one.”
Joining the USRA Super Late Models on Saturday will be the NASCAR RoadRunners and the NASCAR Grand Stocks running heat races and feature events and the always exciting NASCAR Sportsman, who will be competing in “Twin 25” feature events.
The speedway will be hosting a Test and Tune session on Friday, July 7, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. for all classes.
On Saturday, the pits will be open at noon and the racing action will get under way at 6:00 p.m. with qualifying for the USRA Super Late Models and the NASCAR Sportsman followed the full racing program starting at 7:00 p.m.
San Antonio Speedway is the only NASCAR sanctioned short-track in the state of Texas. It is located 3.5 miles south of Loop 410 on State Highway 16 South towards Poteet, near the new Toyota facility.
The grandstand gates will open at 5:00 p.m.
Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for Senior/Military with ID, $3 for children 7-12. Children 6 and under are free.
