Boen best in SUPR Bash
Ft. Worth, TX (Mar 7, 2005) - 2003 SUPR Champ, Kenny Merchant and David Ashley paced the field at the start of the 22 car, 40 lap main event. Merchant got the jump on the field as he quickly moved away from the three wide battles in the pack, with Ashley falling into second. Merchant slipped on lap 3 with Ashley jumping the chance and grabbing the point on lap 4. Rob Litton also got by Merchant for third behind Bubba Mullins.
By lap 5, Kelly Boen had moved up from his 17th starting spot to battle door to door with Alan Vaughan for 8th, while Ken Schrader closed in. Ray Moore II, also on a tear to the front worked his way to the top ten after taking a provisional and starting dead last. By lap 8, Ashley was running away from Litton and Patrick Daniel, but was approaching heavy lap traffic. Boen, Schrader and Moore ran three wide for the eighth spot on lap 9.
Daniel, the 2004 SUPR Rookie, took second away from 2004 SUPR Champ Litton on lap 11. Merchant was fighting with Mullins on lap 15 for fourth, taking the spot. Merchant then tracked down Litton for third on lap 17. Daniel was closing in on leader, Ashley as the race neared the mid point. At halfway the top five were Ashley, Daniel, Merchant, Litton and Boen, with Merchant and Litton side by side.
On lap 23, Ashley was closing in on last nights winner, Raymond Merrill to put him a lap down. Daniel closed to within ten car lengths on the 25th circuit. The races only caution waved on lap 25 when Moore spun due to a flat tire. This rebunched the field with Daniel on the bumper of Ashley as green flew again. Ashley got a big jump on Daniel who got passed by Merchant for second. Boen blasted by both Daniel and Merchant to take the runner-up spot on lap 26.
Litton and Jason Ingalls made contact in turn 2 sending Litton banking off the wall, but never missing a beat. Schrader grabbed seventh from J. Ingalls on lap 29. With ten to go, Ashley had moved away to ten car lengths over Boen who had big gap back to Merchant in third. Vaughan reeled in Merchant on lap 32, with the duo side by side on lap 33. Schrader also picked up another spot getting around Daniel for sixth.
Boen began to quickly run down the leader Ashley with five laps remaining and was close enough to take a look low on lap 36. Boen got by Ashley in turns 1-2, but Ashley fought back going down the back straightaway to hold the point. Boen used the same move in turns 1-2 and snagged the top spot on lap 37, while Merchant and Boen were still slugging it out for third. On the final lap, Ashley took one last ditch shot to get the lead back on low side, but the 2004 WRDA Champion in an unsponsored Rocket Chassis, Boen held him off the pick up the $3000 payday and take the Texas money back to Colorado

KELLY BOEN
“David(Ashley) is a great racer and great guy. The (late) yellow gave us a chance, I knew I had to do something after the yellow. I rolled under him (David Ashley), the car hopped a bit and I just hung on until I saw the checkered flag fly. We had to borrow a ride to get down here, I don’t have a truck and trailer to do much traveling.”
“We had several months off, the car was ready and we just decided at the last minute when we got a ride down with John(Koucher)”
“ I plan to run the last year at Rocky Mountain National Speedway in 2005. If you take the best track out there and times it by five, it wouldn’t be half of what this place is.”
(Pre-race) “My chances tonight depend on the track, if it’s smooth and slicks off, I should be good. If it stays tacky, the swing arm, Rayborn cars will do better. We only had to make a few changes on the body on tires to be able to run with SUPR”
DAVID ASHLEY
“I led too much of this to lose it with three (laps) to go. I don’t know where he (Boen) came from. I knew we were good midway through the race and that we had the car to beat.”
“On a caution the crew indicated someone was close and I looked up at the scoreboard and saw #28 (Kenny Merchant) and #75 (Patrick Daniel). I never saw the #07 (Boen). The 07 was pretty good but I thought I could get him back. I could have driven him dirty but I gave him room.
“This place has been pretty good to us, two top two finishes and a top five.”
KEN SCHRADER (NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver):
“We just missed tonight on the tires. The track was a little hard due to the weather; one end was a little different than the other. We just missed it a little tonight but we haven’t finished a race in a couple of weeks so this is better. It turned out to be a good show tonight with a lot of passing all over, that’s what you want.”
“We have run the dirt car a lot this year, in Phoenix, Florida, Alabama, all over. I always look forward to getting in it.”
“There’s not a nicer dirt track in the country, both here and at Charlotte. So when I get a chance to get here, I do it.”

Dunn slid up in turn giving Chris Henigan and Leuschner the chance to get by, giving Henigan the lead on lap 1. Johno Whittington then got by C. Dunn on lap 1 for fourth. Lap 2 saw Randy Timms break, while Whittington was getting past Leuschner for second.

The top two of Henigan and Whittington began to work away from the pack that was still side by side from fifth on back. Jerry Hoffman got by, a fading C. Dunn on lap 4 to take over the fifth position. One of the two, Ironmen in the field, Troy Taylor rolled to stop on lap 4 to bring out a caution.
Whittington took a peek under Henigan on the restart, but wasn't able to get by, while Chad Wheeler was working his way forward on the high side. On lap 6, Hoffman, Johnny Dunn and Leuschner battled three wide for the third spot. An ailing, Howard Willis fought his way up to fifth on lap, despite being sick. Taylor looped his mount on lap 14 to slow the action. Last years fifth place finisher, PJ Egbert pulled off under caution.
Merrill tried to get under Whittington on the restart as the race came to halfway. At the crossed flags it was Henigan, Whittington, Merrill, Willis and Wheeler in the top five. Willis moved to third on lap 16 getting by Merrill, while David McKay and Gary Clark were side by side for sixth. Willis and Merrill then ran four laps wheel to wheel for the third spot, giving Henigan and Whittington the opportunity to pull ahead.
The final caution was shown on lap 20 when Bryan Sugg and Drake spun in turns 3-4. Whittington again tried the high side move as green was back on, allowing Willis to take a look low for second.
