Carroll Cops First USRA All Star Race Truck Series Win at Houston Motorsports Park

Houston, TX (October 30, 2005) - JB “Bud” Carroll of Streetman won his first-ever United States Racing Association (USRA) All Star Race Truck Series (ARTS) feature Saturday at Houston Motorsports Park. Carroll took the checkered flag in the ‘TexasSpeedZone.Com 50’ several truck-lengths in front of USRA ARTS points leader Shawn Paul Lehman of Manchaca and a strong sixteen-truck field.

Carroll, who has been competing in the series for five years without a win, qualified third-fastest (16.064 seconds) behind Steve Green of Marble Falls (15.631 seconds) and Lehman (15.868 seconds) to start on the inside of the second row.

Josh Cheek of Buffalo, who started on the pole due to the USRA top-6 inversion process, led for the first two laps, but Lehman worked his way past him on the third circuit with Carroll getting by a lap or two later. Carroll then took off in pursuit of Lehman and six laps later was on his back bumper and putting on the pressure. On the twelfth lap Carroll made his move.

“I saw Shawn Paul (Lehman) get sideways coming off the fourth turn,” Carroll said after the race. “So I ducked underneath him and it was a drag race down the front straight. Shawn Paul could have easily cut down on me, but I’ve been racing with him for a long time and he’s always raced me clean. Once I got by I thought it would be easy, but Shawn never gave up and almost got by me a few times towards the end.”

“My truck got a bit too loose,” Lehman said after the race. “I had all I could do to keep from loosing it. But towards the end my spotter told me to let it all hang out, so I did and we almost got by him for the win.” With his second place finish, Lehman extended his USRA ARTS points lead over Keith Patrick of Helotes who finished fifteenth after breaking a right front hub on the twenty-second lap.

Cheek finished third, but was disqualified after a post-race technical inspection found that his wheels did not meet USRA ARTS specifications. Rounding out the top five were Shane Harris of Fairfield, Robert Walton of Del Valle and Rusty Mirth of Austin.

Green, who won the USRA ARTS event at Thunder Hill Raceway last weekend, started fifth due to the inversion and looked like he was going to be a factor in the early going. Unfortunately, his truck suffered a transmission failure on the sixth lap and he was forced to retire from the event.

Only two brief caution periods were needed for minor spins. As a result, the entire 50 green-flag laps were run in less than twenty minutes.
