Texana Raceway Park – Update by Bill Morris - Race Results Saturday. August 13th

Newcomers Race Their Way Into the Texana Raceway Park Winners Circle

One-third of last Saturday’s feature winners at Texana Raceway Park were first time competitors at the south Texas dirt oval. The newcomers were part of over 80 entries that lined up to compete in one of the nine classes that race regularly on the high banks of the quarter mile speedway. As an increasing number of drivers find their Saturday night racing fun at Texana Raceway Park they are joined by an added number of excited fans in the grandstands.

Saving the best until last, the Sunoco IMCA Modified feature highlighted an evening of racing excitement. In the final event of the evening, Corpus Christi’s Steve Whiteker earned his third trip to the victory lane this season. Whiteker started the 20-lap feature event mid-pack, but moved through traffic to challenge and pass heat winner Wade Moyer of Inez for the win.

The lights in many south Texas race shops will be on late into the night this week, as many drivers will be spending their time repairing bent sheet metal. The aggressive racing action caused an unusual number of scrapes and dents during last Saturday’s competition. The Street Stock division took the biggest hit as over half the cars in the class were eliminated or damaged in the preliminary heat action. When the green flag for the feature event waved only three cars were on the track. El Campo’s Johnny Thomas started his damaged Camero in an effort to protect his lead in the season point standings, but only ran a few laps before dropping out. Brad Hayes, of Victoria, won his second feature event of the season ahead of Gonzales’ David Meredith, the only other remaining car in the division.

In other racing action, Vince Loudon of Shiner in the Sports Modifieds and Frank Furia of Wallis in the Dwarf Cars both continued winning streaks in their respective divisions. In the Hot Stock Trucks, veteran driver Bob Ort, of Inez, picked up his first feature win of the season. Alvin drivers, who were making their first appearance at Texana Raceway Park, won both the Mini-Stock and the Bomber class. Kassey Champion took top honors in the Mini Stocks while Joey Champion won the Bomber feature.

The High Powered Late Model competition increased with the addition of new cars to the field. Earl Whatley Jr., of Manville, celebrated his first appearance at TRP in the victory lane, winning the hotly contested Late Model feature ahead of Victoria’s Kevin Migura.

Texana Raceway Park has scheduled racing for the next three Saturdays in an effort to make up events that were postponed due to weather. Next Saturday TRP will host the Houston based Texas Outlaw Bombers. The TOBA regulars will combine with the local drivers to compete for top honors in both the Street Stock and the Bomber divisions. Racing is scheduled to start at 7:30 at Texana Raceway Park, located two miles southeast of Edna, Texas on State Highway 111.
