Inaugural Texas Winter Chalenge, USMTS @ Texana Raceway Park, 11/21/08
By J M Hallas
Edna, Tx.,(November 21st, 2008)
As the second day of Texana Raceway Park's Inaugural USMTS Winter Challenge kicked off, the already crowded pit area got a little cozier as 20 more race teams filed through gates. Both classes added 10 more car to each class, with a few newcomers still expected on Saturday.
Unusually nippy south Texas temperatures may have helped engines create more horsepower but had the spectators bundled up like eskimos. Action on the track quickly helped warm the masses as night two on the tricky 5/16 semi-banked clay oval kicked off with six heat races for the USMTS cars.
Martin Makes off with Modified Main Money
Stillwell, Oklahoman and chassis builder, Eddie Martin showed he can still turn the wheel as he crept away from Jack Sulivan in Friday night's USMTS 30-lap, A-main. Martin used a good starting position to his advantage as he beat Sullivan for the lead at the start of the $2,000 to win event.
The closest Sullivan would get to Martin would be under caution near midway closing back up on Martins rear bumper. Martin, builder of the Big Chief Limited Modified Chassis also holds seminars on chassis set-up and shock technology, which he used to his advantage.
As the green flag waved on the 24-car, 30-lap main event, Martin, from the pole, was first into turn 1. Sullivan fell into second from outside row 1, with Chris Brown third and Tommy Weder jr. and last night's winner, Scott Green side by side for fourth. Weder secured second on lap 1,while Martin and Sullivan put some distance on Brown as the field quickly sorted out single file.
By lap 5 Martin and Sullivan had built their margin over Brown and Weder, who had a similar gap back to Green and Morgan Bagley. Lap 6 saw Randy Timms get under local pilot, Steve Whiteaker jr. for ninth. Martin and Sullivan continued to motor away from the field getting nearly a full straightaway lead by lap 10. Shane Hebert picked off a top ten spot on lap 11 getting by Whiteaker, who slipped high off the bottom groove.
At the halfway point it was Martin and Sullivan in their own area code, with Brown, Weder and Green rounding out the top five. The lead duo lost their huge advantage on lap 16 when Jamie Burford spun to bring out the races only caution. During the yellow Ryan Aho rolled to a top on the front stretch and Hebert surrendered ninth pulling to the infield. Once back to green, Martin and Sullivan again eased away from Brown, Weder and Green.
Timms gave Jon Tesch a quick look low on lap 19 for seventh, but fell back in line. Johno Whittington was able to make a pass on Whiteaker, taking ninth on lap 23. With five to go, Martin had a three car length edge on Sullivan, with the rest of the top six separated out by equal margins. As the white waved Martin had a safe four car lengths on Sullivan as he rode it out the final lap in the Sharp Racing Products, Brasswell Carburators, SRP Shocks, Tim's Automotive Machine powered, Sharp Race Car for the victory.
"I'd almost say we won that feature in the heat race," stated Martin. "The passing points we got in the heat put us in the top eight for the redraw and we drew the "Ace" to put us on the pole. That was probably the key thing. You just have to earn enough passing points to put yourself in that position. It's critical on a tight track like this to get that front row starting spot."
"Last night we tried some experimental stuff on the car, that we've never done before. We learned off that and just went back to the basics. You can look at a track and kind of come up with a game plan, but more often you just go back to the basics. I just use my 26 years of racing experience and know the feel you want out of your car. Sometimes you might struggle with the line to run. I watched the B's to see what's working and what's not."
"Since the USMTS Race was first, I could use what I learned in the USMTS car, but starting mid pack I didn't want to tear up Dean's(Hollier) car. This track is similar to one back back home, but longer straights. The tricky part is getting it slowed down for the corners. It's real easy to overshot the corner here.

White gets it Right for Limited Modified Main
Fomer USAC Silver Crown champion, Paul White used his track experience and good starting spot to take home the bonus money in the 30-lap Limited Modified feature event. White built a good lead early, but was forced to fend off "Valley" veteran Bobby Maupin after several late race restarts for the win.
It took three tries to get the 24-car, 30-lap Limited Modified feature going and staying under green. The first attempt saw White quickly grab the top spot on the front stretch, but the middle of the pack stacked up sending Derrick Ross around, while Eddie Martin and Mike Walling hooked bumpers. The next try saw Dustin Brandl spin and collect Larry Spruce.
The third time was a charm as the field roared into turn 1 with White and Rodney Sanders still side by side. White got the advantage coming out of turn 2 as Sanders fell into second, Maupin third and Jensen Pray fourth. Further back, Howard Willis and Trent Crawford were wheel to wheel for sixth. Willis snagged that spot on lap 1, with Shane Hebert following along to seventh.
Maupin was able to wrestle second away from Sanders on lap 2, while White was building a lead. White was still pulling away on lap 5, with Willis getting by Ross for fifth. Again Hebert came along in Willis' tracks getting sixth on lap 6. Maupin started to reel in White some by lap 8 and got a break on lap 9 when Vince Louden got turned around by Brian Rye to bring out a yellow.
As green waved again, White quickly opened up a gap, that was short-lived as Maupin closed back in. Shane Hoefling grabbed a top ten spot getting by Dean Hollier. Last night's winner, J J Jennings took eleventh from Hollier a lap later. The Willis/Hebert train continued chugging to the front as they both got by Pray on lap 14. At hafway it was White, Maupin, Sanders, Willis and Hebert rounding out the top five.
By lap 20 the top six had separated out equally until caution for a spin by Dwayne Norvell rebunched the field. White got away clean on the restart, while Willis looked for a way under Sanders for third. Hebert spun from fifth on lap 23 sending the back of field scattering. In the melee, Hoefling, Louden and Hollier all made contact. As he field came back to green, Hollier and Brian McDevitt tangled but kept rolling to avoid a caution.
With five to go, White had a coule car lengths on Maupin, who had good advantage back to Sanders, Willis and Pray. Don Painter spun on lap 28 to bring the yellow back out. Once back under green, Maupin hung on to White through turns 1-2, but White was able to pull him off the corner. One last caution on lap 29 for debris would set up a one lap shootout to the finish. White got a good restart and was able inch away in the Bridwell Motorsports, Mopar powred, Dust Devil Chassis for the win
