ASCS Gulf South Weekend Double on Tap!
by Lonnie Wheatley
TULSA, OK. (August 11, 2008) – With the championship points battle heating up, the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region takes on southeast Texas for this weekend's Third Annual ¼-Mile Summer Nationals at a pair of different tracks.
On Friday night, the series takes to the Golden Triangle Raceway Park. The weekend then wraps up with Saturday night's event at Houston Raceway Park.
The series most recent weekend of action, nearly a month ago on July 18-19, resulted in a major shakeup in the points race when then-leader Chris Sweeney junked a race car and dropped to fourth in points.
Moving to the top of the point charts is three-time series runner-up Greg Rilat, who is gunning for a first career ASCS Gulf South Region championship.
Rilat's lead is a slim one though with nine events still remaining, as defending series champion Brandon Berryman of Missouri City, TX, is just 18 points back in second.
Also still in the title mix is Beaumont's Gary Watson, who is just 32 points off of Rilat's pace. Watson topped the series most recent outing at Golden Triangle Raceway Park.
Sweeney of Channelview, TX, is now 55 points out of the lead in fourth, with Tommy Bryant of Conroe, TX, now fifth in points after capturing his first career series win in the series most recent event on July 19.
Rookie shoe Travis Elliott enters the weekend sixth in points, with 17-year-old Channin Tankersley (Highlands, TX), Travis Knighton (Danbury, TX), Brandon Corn (Hearne, TX) and Terry Monroe (Shreveport, LA) completing the current top ten.
With 14 events in the books, ten different drivers have collected at least one ASCS Gulf South feature win thus far in 2008. Jason Johnson tops the Gulf South win charts with three triumphs, while Berryman and Tankersely have both doubled up with a pair of wins. Single victories have been claimed by Jack Dover, Sweeney, Ryan Hall, Michael Dupuy, Bryn Gohn, Watson and Bryant.
Friday's action at Golden Triangle Raceway Park goes green at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's card at Houston Raceway Park firing off at 7:00 p.m.
Golden Triangle Raceway Park is located 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90 near Beaumont, TX. For more information, contact the track at 409-752-7200.
Houston Raceway Park is located east of Houston on I-10 to Exit 798, then three miles south on State Road 146, then 0.8 miles southeast on FM 1405, then 1.5 miles northeast on FM 565. For more information, contact the track at 281-383-7223.
The ASCS Gulf South Region is set for 23 nights of racing action at ten different tracks throughout Texas and Louisiana in 2008.
The nation's most prominent Sprint Car sanctioning body with a dozen different Regions throughout the United States in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car Series' (ASCS) 17th year of activity will include approximately 250 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout 28 different states and Canada.
