Spreen continues to lead ROY chase after second-place finish
(Wichita Falls, TX) It was a “bumpy” ride for 14-year-old Dillon Spreen as he grabbed a second-place finish in Saturday night’s Premier Minerals, Inc. 75 Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) late models race at Red River Speedway (RRS).
Spreen (Boerne, TX), who finished second to Robert Barker (also from Boerne), would have liked to have enjoyed his best-ever finish in TSRS competition. Instead, the youngster battled the Texas heat, Barker and rocks on the track – and rocks from the pits.
“We struggled the whole day,” stated Spreen, whose father (Greg) and grandfather have also been racers before him. “We had a bad push and the car was loose coming off the corner. We qualified second-to-last so we pulled the car out of impound. Chris Schild (driver of the #7), his dad, Gerald Boyd and my dad worked on the car before the race.”
Spreen continued, “One thing I didn’t like – there were rocks all over the place. My dad (Greg) told me not to warm up my tires because he was afraid we’d get a flat running over a rock on the track. We know the Red River Speedway people worked hard on it. You could hear the rocks on the track; when someone came out of the pits you were worried about that car bringing more rocks out on the track.”
Spreen, who leads the 2008 TSRS Rookie of the Year points race, was thankful to his sponsors – South Bay, AT&T/Real Yellow Pages, NAPA Auto Care, Lester’s Automotive, Spreen Racing Engines and Swenson Racing Chassis – as well as the folks at the track.
“Those people at the track – among them, Chris Schild, his dad and Gerald Boyd – really helped us a lot,” Spreen revealed. “We took the car out of impound then went out (on the track) just hoping the adjustments would work. Thankfully, they worked. We loosened the car up from the center to get a little more forward bite.”
