TPS Starts 33rd Year at Red River Speedway - on March 29
San Antonio, Texas, March 6, 2008 - The Texas Pro Sedans touring series begin their 2008 season at Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas on Saturday night, March 29. The TPS race will mark the start of their 33rd consecutive season of four cylinder stock car racing in the southwest and the first time to race at the newly re-opened Red River Speedway (RRS) quarter mile, 13 degree banked asphalt track.
Texas Pro Sedans Series Race and Administrative Director, Neil Upchurch has announced an official paid, pre-entry list of 24 TPS drivers have been received to date.
The Texas Pro Sedans racing program will consist of 2 laps of Qualifying Time Trials. The fastest TPS driver will establish the Texas Pro Sedans qualifying track record at RRS. Two ten lap Qualifying Heat Races will grid based upon the results from the Qualifying Time Trials. The finishing order in the Qualifying Heat races will determine the starting grid for the TPS Feature Race.
The March 29th, 40 Lap TPS Feature Race will compete under Texas Pro Sedans rules and procedures in which yellow flag laps are not scored. The RRS transponder system will score all TPS competition. A green-white-checkered flag is required to officially finish a TPS race under full racing conditions.
Included in the entry list are drivers who have won the TPS Driver Championship ten times during the past 32 seasons of competition and two other drivers of significant note:
The defending TPS Champion, Sergio Hexsel of Live Oak, Texas will again drive his #20 VW Rabbit. He won the TPS Championship in 2005 and 2007 TPS. Hexsel won three TPS feature races in winning the TPS 2007 Title by a four point margin over Ja Lane of Katy, Texas in his #85 Ford Focus.
Six time TPS Champion Bill LaBarge of Bryan has filed entry for his #27 BMW “Beamer” with a larger engine for the March 29th TPS race at RRS. He won the TPS Championship in 1992, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2003 and 2004. No other driver has dominated the TPS series championship as has Bill LaBarge.
Two time TPS Champion Donnie Moore of Hutto, Texas has filed entry in the #10 George Merrell VW Scirocco for the March 29th TPS race at RRS. Moore won the TPS Championship in 1990 and 2006.
Mike Knotts of Universal City, Texas and Pete Wright have filed their entries for season beginning race at RRS. Knotts has competed in all but three of more than 700 TPS races in 32 years. Mike Knotts, along with Pete Wright of Ft. Worth are two only charter TPS members. The race will mark Wright’s return to TPS competition since he moved to Ft. Worth many years ago.
In addition to the Texas Pro Sedans, a full program of Legend and all four RRS class races will also highlight the March 29th, 2008 re-opening night race program at Red River Speedway.
