Icebreaker @ Abilene Speedway, 2/23/2008
By J M Hallas
Abilene, Tx.(Feb. 23rd, 2008) Day two of Abilene Speedway's Icebreaker saw teams and fans greated by nearly perfect conditions, though as night fell temeratures dropped off. The track again was in perfect conditions providing various grooves for the nights racing. Several new cars signed in replacing the ones that suffered weekend ending damage, plus the local Limited Late Model class had it's season opener on the card.
Eastlands Edwards Erases Modified Competition
With plenty of track experience, and a track title under his belt, Eastland's Robbie Edwards showed his rear bumper to the field and never looked back. Edwards built a big lead after a scary crash by Danny Patterson brought out a red flag. Then held off all comers when as a late caution erased that lead taking the IMCA Modified A-main event.
The start of the 20-lap, 21-car IMCA Modified A-main saw Edwards beat Justin Radcliff into turn 1 for the lead as the top 6 sorted out single file. Yellow waved on lap 2 for a spin by Leon Mulder. On the restart, Radcliff slid high giving up spots to Jim Thorp, Kelly Allen and Mike Hansen. Radcliff would then spin causing a stack up and melee, that saw Danny Patterson climb over someones wheel and sail end over end, over the turn 3 hill. Patterson was able to climb out and walk away, uninjured.
On the restart Allen took a look under Thorp for second as Edwards pulled away. On lap 3 Scotty Brown and Monte Bolton were wheel to wheel for fifth. Allen finaly got the nose inside Thorp on lap 5 to take second. Thorp then slid high and rolled to a stop to bring out yellow on lap 6. Once back to green, Edwards edged away from Allen as the race came to halfway.
At the crossed flags it was Edwards, Allen, Hansen, Brown and Priddy in the top five, with Hansen looking inside Allen for second. Hansen again tried the move on lap 11, but fell back in line. Edwards was increasing his lead on lap 12, while second through twelveth ran nose to tail. Brown then began to put the heat on Hansen for third on lap 14. While fighting for fifth, Priddy and Randy Brands made contact, sending Priddy around and Brands falling several places.
A lap 16 caution for debris erased Edwards' big lead and rebunched the field for a final run to the checkers. As green waved, Edwards again nched away from Allen, while Brown was ableto get around Hansen for third. Edwards was able to easily run off from Allen to get the victory in the E&E Custom Paint & Body, Braka Operating, R&B Energy, High Impact Graphics, EBAV Iron Inc. Pflugerville Machine, Hughes Chassis

White Whip 'Em, Yet Again
After suffering car problems while leading Friday nights A-main, two-time IMCA Southern SportMod Champion, Keith White got it back on track, literally. White drew the pole once again and held off former modified track champion, Josh McGaha at the start to go on to lead flag to flag for the win.
The 20-car, 20-lap IMCA Southern SportMod A-main saw White and McGaha stay wheel to wheel through turns 1-2. On the back stretch, White secured the lead as the top five sorted out single file. Shane Priddy and Justin Shaw ran side by side for sixth, with Priddy taking the spot. As White and McGaha motored ahead, the two Green brothers, Kevin and T J, battled for third. By lap 5 White was beginning to put distance on McGaha as Priddy began looking inside Jonathon Campbell for fifth.
T J Green got the best of the brotherly battle getting by Kevin on lap 8 for third. As the race came to midway it was White, McGaha, T. J. Green, K. Green and Campbell. Back in the pack, Kenneth Graves, Johnny Torres and Brian Brooks were three wide for positon that saw Brooks spin and bring out caution. On the restart, White got away clean from McGaha by several car lengths, while Priddy pulled off from sixth.
White increased his margin as the Green brothers moved in on McGaha in a fight for second. Michael Tennison and Campbell ran side by side on lap 17 with Tennison getting fifth. Campbell then lost sixth to Philip Houston a lap later. As the race wound down to the white flag the scrap for second came to head when T J Green spun, behind him Lance Ragan would spin and Tanner Cox ended up high-centered on an infield tire. The race was flagged with White in the Tracys Auto Sales, Central Texas Pest Control, D&S Painting, Finishline Restoration, Braka Operating(Steve Hayes), Pflugerville Machine, Big Chief Chassis getting the victory.

Colyer Collects I-Stock Cash
Local Racer, Joe Colyer, patiently worked his way up from his fourth row starting spot and took over the point on lap 12. From there Colyer built a big lead in the final laps to become the second budget IMCA Stock Car to take victory over the top guns.
J W Johnson led the 24-car starting field into turn 1, but Jeff Joldersma would get the top spot on lap 1 after Johnson slipped in turn 3. T J Wilson and Jeremy Gettler followed Joldersma by Johnson to second. Mark Lord broke and stopped in turn 4 to bring out a yellow on lap 3. During the caution, front runner Jeff Turner would pull off. On the restart, Wilson took a look inside Joldersma, while Jonhson was trying to get third back from Gettler. Neither was successful.
Johnson fell back to battle with Bobby Sikes jr and as he two got hooked up at the front bumpers, Sikes spun in front of the field. The first few car dodged Sikes, but the remainder of field piled in totally blocking the track and giving the rear of the pack nowhere to go but into the pile. The grinding crash took out several cars, but all the drivers would be alright.
Once back to green, Wilson got by Joldersma to lead lap 5, while Colyer picked off second spot. Gettler got by Joldersma for third as Joldersma slowed with a flat tire and pulled off. Just before halfway, Colyer caught Wilson for the lead, with Gettler, Johnson and Cary White running nose to tail for third a little ways back. At halfway it was Wilson, Colyer, Gettler, White and Johnson in the top five.
Gettler broke free of the third place fight ad ran down the lead duo. Colyer, using the high groove, got around Wilson for the lead on lap 12 with Gettler using the same move to get second. Wilson then lost third to White before pulling to the infield with problems. In the final five laps Colyer was able to put a good margin on Gettler and cruise off to the win with a big lead in his homebuilt motor and chassis, sponsored by Dereks Auto Sales.

Sodek Sweet in Hobby Stock Scramble
Polesitter Nathan Sodek would lead early and often as he grabbed the victory in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Sodek would use good jumps on restarts to lead flag to flag in his run to the checkers.
Sodek quickly jumped out front a the start of the 20-car, 20-lap IMCA Hobby Stock A-main with Roy Polk falling into second, Noel Jones third and Shannon Anderson looking under Charles Cosper for fourth. Cosper held off Anderson and moved in on Jones for third. As they ran side by side, Anderson tried to make a third groove, but got too high and ended up spining himself, but continue.
Yellow waved on lap 6 when Dwayne Bowen spun in turn 2, Jones stopped under yellow with a broken front suspension giving up his top five spot. Sodek got a good lead once back under green, while Justin Fowler looked inside Bryan Sewell and Stephen Robison ran door to door with Allen Montgomery for sixth. Montgomery completed he pass on lap 7. Truman Davis spun on lap 8 after contact with Randy Anderson in turn 4 to bring out a caution. R. Anderson was black-flagged and sent off.
Sodek got away clean again as green waved and the race came to the crossed flags. Polk, Cosper, Sewell and Montgomery rounded out the top five. Sewell then tried to get by Cosper for third, but came up short on lap 11. Polk slid high on lap 13 allowing Cosper to get along side for second. As Polk, Cosper and Sewell battled some contact was made and slowed the trio. In the back up Montgomery slowed and got tagged by Robison sending him around for another caution.
On the final restart, Sodek now had Cosper on his bumper, but once again get a good jump on green. Sewell was able to get around Polk on lap 15, while S. Anderson was working his way back up from the tail. But S. Anderson tried the same groove that got im in trouble earlier, with the same results, a spin. The Limited Late Models opened their 2008 season with polesitter, Vince Ogle quickly jumping into the lead of the 20 lapper. Terry Owen fell into second, while Jim Scott spun but continued on, without a yellow. Owen then reeled in Ogle for the lead and was looking for way past as the lead duo ran up on slower traffic. Ogle came out with some distance on Owen but lost that advantage as he got out of the groove in turn 2 giving Owen the chance to run him back down.
Owen and Ogle were forced to go three wide around a slower car before yellow was throw for fluid being dropped by Bill Poindexter. On the restart, Ogle got away from Owen as the race came to halfway with Robert Pittman, J. Scott and Charlie Underwood completing the top five. Owen spun while trying to avoid the car of Shelby Scott who was pulling off the track.
