Sevens Soar Saturday at HMP
by Mick Anderson
Houston, TX (July 9, 2007) - The only better place for HMP Pro Stock veteran Arthur Hermiz to be on the seventh day of the seventh month in 2007 would have been Las Vegas. But he wasn’t complaining after he won the 40 Lap Pro Stock feature event in car #777 at ASA member track Houston Motorsports Park Saturday night in Destiny’s Child fashion.
The other #7 car feature winner Chris Schild, going for his 4th consecutive TSRS feature win, was not so lucky when he was DQ’d following a post race tech inspection in which his carburetor was determined not legal. Schild amicably filed an appeal, politely arguing that he and his crew had made no alterations on the carburetor since its arrival from Holley. Tech director, Jack Sandefur will make a final ruling later this week and the “official” results will be posted at that time.
Bobby Joe New was the beneficiary of Schild’s misfortune when he moved up from second place in the TSRS “Jake Wallace 75” feature event with Joe Aramendia, Chris’s brother Brian Schild, Beau Bukowski and Bobby Teer Jr. rounding out the top five. Boerne’s Robert Barker was the evening’s TSRS fast qualifier on his first visit to Houston Motorsports Park and Gary Chancellor took the Hard Charger Award by improving by eight positions.
In ASA Pro Late Model division action, Houston’s Jason Young became HMP’s first four-feature winner of the 2007 season by holding off Kyle Sirizzotti, Brandon Bendele, Ralph Burris Jr. and Kristin Bumbera. Young’s win put him in a virtual tie with Bumbera for first place in the Pro Late model points race at the mid-point of the season. Only ten of the 16 cars that started finished the 75-lap event with carnage and disqualification claiming six racers.
Trey Mitchell took Pro Modified 60 lap feature win honors after apparent race winner Tuffy Hudson was DQ’d at tech. Double duty driver, Ralph Burris Jr., took second followed by Brad Hudak, J.C. Umschied and H.E. Naumann. With a 10th place finish, Hannah Baker, hung onto second place in the Pro Modifieds points standings joining Kristin Bumbera as one of two women drivers vying for season championship honors at HMP.
Other evening feature event winners in the 108 car field (second biggest of the year for HMP) included Jim Albert in the Pro Trucks, Jack Kelly in the Allison Legacys, Bayley Currey in the Bandoleros,Stephen Abbey in the Legends and Jeff Sandell in the Thunder Roadsters. Racing resumes at HMP on July 21st.
