San Antonio, TX (October 8, 2006) – He might not have had the fastest United States Racing Association (USRA) Truck Series ride, but Jason Marshall got all the right breaks and came home with this first ever USRA Truck Series win at San Antonio Speedway’s 10th Annual OktoberFAST on Saturday.

The 50-lap race featured one of the most spectacular wrecks in the 30-year history of the half-mile, high-banked facility with two laps remaining. At the start, the 12-truck field had just taken the green flag when Marshall, who started on the pole, and former USRA Truck Series champion Shawn Paul Lehman, who was on the outside pole, made hard contact sending Lehman into the wall and out of the race with major damage. Marshall’s truck sustained no noticeable damage and he was able to continue. On the complete restart, Marshall got out first, but two laps later Craig Roper, winner of four USRA Truck Series events this season and the fastest qualifier for this race, looked like he would dominate the race after he easily passed Marshall on the third lap from his fourth place starting spot. The race was only five laps old when Brent Bell spun wildly down the front straight bringing out the second of five caution periods that slowed the pace. When the race resumed, Roper took off and started to build a substantial lead until lap 16 when USRA Truck Series points leader Steve Green and Jim Albert tangled to bring out the yellow flag once again. During the caution Green pitted to repair some body damage and change a tire. Surprisingly, Roper also pitted to change a tire and lost two laps when the race got back under way without him. That left Marshall with the lead, Damon Bean second, Rusty Mirth third, Bell fourth and rookie Jody Buzbee fifth at the restart. As the laps clicked off, Marshall was able to hold Bean in check as Bell picked of Mirth and set sail for the leaders. But as Bell tried to get by Bean, the pair touched coming off the fourth turn and they slid down the front straight side-by-side to bring out the fourth caution of the evening. Neither truck was damaged and the pair restarted at the rear of the pack. On the restart, Marshall got a good jump on Mirth who had inherited second and Buzbee who now found himself in third. But with only two laps remaining, Bell and Bean tangled again coming off the fourth turn, but this time with disastrous results for Bean. Somehow Bean’s ride got completely sideways and when the tires got a grip his truck launched into a series of flips – some say three, some say four - that took him well down the straight demolishing his truck. Parts were flying everywhere as Bean’s shattered truck landed on what was left of its four tires and sat smoldering in the middle of the track. The safety crew rushed to the scene and, thankfully, it wasn’t long before they announced that the driver was OK much to the relief of the OktoberFAST crowd. After the debris was cleared, Marshall was able to keep Mirth and Buzbee at bay over the final two laps and drove to victory circle for the first time in his USRA Truck Series career. Mirth, Buzbee and Green rounded out the top four, the only trucks remaining on the lead lap. "It feels really good getting that first win,” Marshall said in what had to be the understatement of the evening. “ It was a long time coming.” “I definitely wasn’t the fastest truck out there,” Marshall continued. “The 40 truck (Roper) was obviously real fast … Under the last caution the motor was overheating and when we had to shut it off I wasn’t sure if it would start again. With two to go the throttle started sticking. So there was a lot going on out there. We're looking to get better next year and be able to run with the 40 truck. Tonight was kind of a fluke. I want to be able to beat him straight up.” Results of the USRA Truck Series 50-lap feature event at the 10th Annual OktoberFAST at San Antonio Speedway, 10/07/06 Position, Car Number, Name, Hometown, Qualifying Time, Laps Completed 1.
