Texas Thunder Speedway 5-27-06 BY J M Hallas Dodge County I. M. C. A. Modifieds G W Goes Back to Back, Egberts Boys 1, 2, 4 Again The IMCA Modifieds kicked off their 20 lap A-main event with Bill Lecompte and G W Egbert on the front row. G W Egbert got a good jump as the green waved, Dan Roberts fell into to second and Ken Old third. G W Egbert quickly began to inch away as Old looked for a away around Roberts. Pat McGuire moved in to challenge Trevor Egbert for fifth on lap 4, with the duo wheel to wheel on lap 5. Doug Lorenz had his night end on lap when he exploded a motor and slid to a stop atop the turn 1 run off. As green flew again G W Egbert got out easily to a good lead, while Allen Waltermire tried low on Old for third. T. Egbert, on the high side, moved in along side Waltermire in turns 1-2, then caught Old for third on the back stretch. In the meantime, P J Egbert coming from row five, was on the move getting by Waltermire for fifth on lap 7. Waltermire would then do a 360% spin and keep going but losing several spots. G W Egbert caught traffic just before halfway and as the crossed flags were shown it was G W Egbert, Roberts, T. Egbert, P J Egbert and McGuire in the top five. G W almost saw his hope for the Friday/Saturday twin win go away when he overdrove turn 3 and nearly went over the top of the corner. G W Egbert ran into heavy traffic on lap 12 and in a bold move move blasted by an already three wide fight on the back stretch. Behind him brother Trevor, was catching Roberts for second, as cousin P J closed in on both. P J Egbert blew by T. Egbert and Roberts on lap 14 to snag second. T. Egbert continued to battle with Roberts while P J Egbert started to run down G W Egbert. In the final laps P J Egbert closed to within six car lengths with two to go. G W Egbert, who was held behind a lap car, saw P J Egbert catch him on the last lap but G W Egbert was able to hold him off in the Big Tex Autoplex, Pro Image Signs & Graphics, Midwest Motorsports, Pflugerville Machine, Affiliated Auto Glass, Phils Paint & Body, Dannys Transmissions, Hoffman Chassis for the victory. The Egbert boys, all IMCA Modified Rookie of the Years in three successive years finished first, second and fourth for second night in a row. Friday night saw the Egbert young guns with same finish at Heart O Texas Speedway in Waco. Sunday night they’ll look to fill the top spots again in a special Sunday show as they return to Heart O Texas Speedway. “ I think all our success here is from our Grandpa,” replied G W Egbert. “He put it in our blood. I’ve never won back to back nights in the IMCA Modifieds, maybe in the IMCA Stock Cars. It was a lot of fun. P J was coming on quick.” We’re definately going to try for the three-peat at Heart O Texas Sunday,” added G W. “It’s going to a little harder. With the draw/redraw it’s always more difficult. I usually don’t draw good.” IMCA Modified 1. 717 G W Egbert 2. 707 P J Egbert 3. 25 Dan Roberts 4. 78 Trevor Egbert 5. 9 William McGuire 6. 27 Danny Gribble 7. 52 Ken Old 8. 15 Andrew Simmerman 9. 12T Jimmy Tidwell 10. 44 Allen Waltermire 11. 7 J D Schleis 12. 19 George Lamphere 13. 4 David Hanusch 14. 247 Bill Lecompte 15. 96 Johnny Sheets 16. 24 Gary Simmerman 17. 97 Douglas Lorenz 18. 39 Paul Mullins 19. 70 George Egbert Hertz Rent A Car I. M. C. A. Southern SportMods White Wins After a While Away In the 15 lap, 11-car IMCA SportMod feature, Corey Homan and Chuck Schoenfeld led the field to green. The two stayed side by side through turns 1-2 with Schoenfeld getting the lead on the back stretch. Trace Crawford, Homan and Keith White ran three wide for second as K. White sailed by both for the spot. K. White caught Schoenfeld and took the lead on lap 2 with Crawford moving into second, Shad Stevens third and Chase Jupe snagging fifth on lap 2. K. White quickly showed he still was one to beat on Texas Thunders high-banks, even after some time away running a different track, as he increased his lead over Crawford and Stevens. That duo was wheel to wheel on lap 5 with Stevens taking the spot. At the crossed flags the field had separated out with K. White, Stevens, Crawford, Schoenfled and Jupe in the top five. K. White built a full straightaway lead by lap 10 as the defending IMCA Southern SportMod National Champion strutted his stuff. Stevens and Crawford continued to scrap for second while Jupe closed in on Schoenfeld. Jupe tried a shot at Schoenfeld on lap 13, with Crawford taking a last try on Stevens on the last lap. But up front it was K. White taking the easy win in the Traceys Auto Sales, Stewart Painting, Central Texas Pest Control, Pflugerville Engine & Machine, San Antonio Auto Auction, Smileys Chassis. “I don’t think it’s ever that easy,” quipped White. “I just think we know the race track that well. Some of these guys are just starting out, in this class and on the this track. I know the track really well. I can go where I need to.” When asked if being the defending National Champ put a bulls-eye on him, White added. “Oh definately! I think we had one Friday night in Waco. I got turned around, so yes we’ve got a big bulls-eye on us. Everyone want’s to outrun me. We’ve had a pretty good year so far though. We’re going to try to keep it going.” “I miss battling with the IMCA Modified guys. It’s hard to just watch them race. I hope to have one out here in a couple weeks and renew some of those rivalries.” IMCA Southern SportMod 1. 1 Keith White 2. 231 Shad Stevens 3. 63C Trace Crawford 4. 14 Chuck Schoenfeld 5. 30 Chase Jupe 6. 2 Brandon Stewart 7. 83 Kenny Ware 8. 52 Mark McDaniel 9. 17W Billy White 10. 34 Corey Homan 11. 11W Kevin West Corbin & Associates, Atty's I. M. C. A. Stock Cars P J Pulls Away in I-Stock Main P J Egbert and Anthony Otken led the 13-car IMCA Stock Car feature to green and bounced off each other on the front stretch. Egbert got into turn 1 first and began to pull away while the pack raced three wide behind him. Yellow came out on lap 2 for debris on the track. On the restart, Benji Kirkpatrick got by Robin Rasmussen for fifth, then Ron Simpson for fourth. Kirkpatrick, who won back to back the past two weeks, then took third from Otken on lap 3. Simpson and Eric Jones also passed Otken on lap 4, with Jones then taking fourth from Simpson. Vernon Owens and Shad Stevens moved by Otken on lap, while Justin McGehee pulled off from second. At halfway it was Egbert, Kirkpatrick, Jones, Simpson and Owens in the top five until Kirkpatrick overshot turn 3 and found himself spinning off the edge. Kirkpatrick was able to refire and continue in the same track position, but one lap down. With five to go, Egbert had built a full straight advantage over Jones. Egbert hit lap traffic on lap 12 as Owens, Stevens Rasmussen and Tommy Honey fought it out for fourth. Egbert easily cut through slower cars and hardly missed a beat as he ran off to snare the victory in the Phils Motorsports, Pflugerville Engine and Machine, homebuilt chassis. “I think it was just starting up front that I was able to walk away with it,” said P J Egbert regarding his dominating win. “It’s a car we retired in 1999. A couple buddies helped me pull it out of the field and put it together.” “ My cousin just needs a little bad luck,” added P J about finishing second the G W in the IMCA Modified twice. “That’s two nights in a row he’s beat me. I’d like to see him start in the back with me and see how it goes from there.” When told about the possibility of Keith White coming back into the IMCA Modifieds again the young hotshoe replied, “He’s a tough competitor. That’s who I try to outrun whenever we pull out on the track together. He’s probably ‘the best’ in Texas.” IMCA Stock Cars 1. 1 PJ Egbert 2. 84X Eric Jones 3. 44 Ron Simpson 4. 23 Shad Stevens 5. 8 Vernon Owens 6. 18K Tommy Honey 7. 3 Robin Rasmussen 8. 86Z Zana Craig 9. 43 Jessie James Cox Jr 10. 58 DJ Mac Williams 11. 47 Benji Kirkpatrick 12. 318 Scott Bowles 13. 79 Justin McGehee 79X Anthony Otken---DNS 09 Gary Norman---DNS Kwik Kar Oil & Lube Street Stocks Mitch Tierney and Ryan Anderson paced the 16-car, 15 lap Street Stock feature to the green flag with Tierney grabbing the early lead. The lead duo caught slower traffic quickly on lap 5 and Tierney was forced to root a slower car out of the way. Defending track champion, Simmerman got by Dunn for third on lap 6 with Wininger following to fourth. At halfway the top five were Tierney, J. Fuller, Simmerman, Wininger and Dunn. J. Fuller used the high side to drive around Tieney on lap 8 and lead at the line on lap 9. The top three had separated out by lap 10, but a caution for debris on lap 12 would rebunch the field. As green waved again, the top three got away clean with J. As Tuerck held the top spot, Call, Simpson and Mendenhall slugged it out for second. Harvey Howerton lost a wheel on lap 11 to bring the yellow out and rebunch the field. The lead duo pullede away on the restart with Call trying to find a way around Tuerck. The two ran door to door on lap 13 and traded paint coming out of turn 4.
