The Konica Minolta 100 is set to take the green flag at 5:45 p.m., just prior to the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series Bombardier Learjet 500k. The pageantry of a Texas Motor Speedway race weekend always brings out the stars. The June 8-10 Indy Racing League IndyCar Series Bombardier Learjet 500k weekend is no exception. One of the hottest new country music recording artists will sing one of her latest recordings for her upcoming new CD release and also perform the National Anthem.
Nineteen-year-old Erika Jo, born in Angleton, Texas, will sing “Gentlemen, Start Your Engines” and then present the National Anthem prior to the start of the Friday, June 9 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Sam’s Town 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. “The pre-race activities at Texas Motor Speedway have become quite a spectacle in themselves for our race fans,” TMS President Eddie Gossage said. “Texas Motor Speedway provides one of the biggest stages in America on which musicians perform for thousands of fans in a unique outdoor setting. Hearing the talented voice of Erika Jo will be a special treat for our race fans.”
Erika Jo burst on to the national music scene in 2005 shortly after graduating from Wilson Central High School (just east of Nashville, Tenn.), where her family had moved to from Texas before she turned two. While squeezing in senior prom and high school graduation, she earned a recording contract from Universal South Records after become the youngest contestant and first female to win competition on the Nashville Star television program on USA Network. In the course of just a few weeks after the competition, Erika Jo put the finishing touches on her debut album, filmed her first video, released her first single, made her Grand Ole Opry debut and sat for dozens of interviews, including NBC’s “Today” show.
Erika Jo’s first single, “I Break Things”, was released immediately upon her Nashville Star victory. Her initial album, Erika Jo, was released shortly after that and debuted at #5 on Billboard’s country album chart. It out-sold Kenny Chesney, Gretchen Wilson, Big & Rich, Tim McGraw and Shania Twain, among others that first week.
Erika Jo moved from Angleton, Texas (south of Houston) with her dad, Bo, and mom, Paige, and at age four started singing with her father’s country cover band. She auditioned for Nashville Star in November 2004, just five days after her 18th birthday.

STARS BOWL FOR CHARITY
Sam Hornish Jr., a two-time IndyCar Series race winner at Texas Motor Speedway, hopes to find the winning lane during the June 10 Bombardier Learjet 500k. But, prior to race night, the avid bowler hopes to find the groove in the bowling lanes. The driver of the No. 6 Team Penske entry is hosting the second annual Sam Hornish Jr. Celebrity Bowling Tournament on Wednesday, June 7 at 7 p.m. at AMF Showplace Lanes in Euless, Texas., with proceeds benefiting Speedway Children’s Charities. Retired NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver Rusty Wallace is scheduled to bowl in the tournament. Now that he is not in a race car each week, Wallace spends his time working as a television analyst for the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series telecasts on ABC and ESPN. Other celebrities scheduled to participate in the tournament are ABC/ESPN motorsports reporter Jamie Little, Forth Worth-Dallas television sports anchors Newy Scruggs (KXAS-TV) and Donovan Campbell (KDAF-TV), and others. The Texas Motor Speedway “10 Years Strong Experience” is back for the June 8-10 Indy Racing League IndyCar Series Bombardier Learjet 500k race weekend. The unique display, which debuted during the April NASCAR race weekend at Texas, features the Top 10 Moments in Texas Motor Speedway History. The gigantic display tent begins to take shape for race week on Friday, June 2, when speedway workers begin positioning the race cars that are part of the historic moments of the speedway in the display The Indy Racing League features prominently in the top moments at Texas. The “10 Years Strong Experience” features displays for A.J. Foyt and Arie Luyendyk’s 1997 post-race “meeting” in Victory Lane, Al Unser, Jr.’s last win of his illustrious career, and Sam Hornish Jr. edging Helio Castroneves in the closest IRL finish in speedway history. The 9,000-square foot area features audio and video presentations of the top moments and is located in the Midway area outside of Gate 4 on the frontstretch.
CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK
It’s Win or Go Home….Legends-style at Texas Motor Speedway. The weekly Saturday night Mayors races conclude this Saturday with the championship event. Each week during May, four area mayors compete in Legends cars at Texas Motor Speedway with the winner advancing to the title event at the end of the month. The special race each week is part of the regular schedule of Legends racing. Residents of the cities being represented each week receive free admission to the races that night. Murphy Mayor Bret Baldwin advanced to this Saturday’s championship event with his preliminary round victory on Saturday. Baldwin finished ahead of Justin Mayor Howard Young (2nd), Keller City Council member Russell Lake (3rd), and Lewisville Mayor Gene Carey (4th). Baldwin is in the finals with Flower Mound Mayor Jody Smith, Rhome Mayor Mark Lorance, and one more driver to be determined. Scheduled to compete this Saturday are North Richland Hills Mayor Oscar Trevino, Haslet Mayor Gary Hulsey, Roanoke Mayor Scooter Gierisch, and Trophy Club Mayor Nick Sanders .
