Icebreaker @ Abilene Speedway - 2/26/06 By J M Hallas Abilene, TX (February 27, 2006) - As the final day for Annual Icebreaker the began drivers, crews and fans were finally greeted by great weather conditions. Sunny, warm central Texas weather was a relief for everyone, but took its toll on the track surface as it quickly dried, making for slick conditions and left crew chiefs scrambling for a different set-up. Sunday’s Icebreaker finale was for the IMCA classes only with points being awarded both on the National and Regional level as well as track points. 154 cars returned to battle for the purse, the points and of course, bragging rights until October’s Southern Challenge. IMCA Modifieds Heat Races---Top 2 to Main 1. 715 Mike Mclaughlin, 911 Josh McGaha 2. 718 Cody Smith, 19 David Elliott 3. 181 Tim Clonch, 183 Chad Estes 4. 45 David Trauermicht, 44 Scotty Brown 5. 7 Steve Hayes, 89 Bo Newton 6. 33 William Gould, 6 Jason Schoenberger IMCA Southern Sports Mods---Top 3 to A-Main 1. 69 Mary Hogue, 38 Matt Mueller, 441 Austin Junod 2. 18 Tim Clonch, 30 Albert McCall, 87 Kevin Sustaire 3. 131 Michael Martin, 44 Jeff Turner, 16 David Riley (33 Ryan Lawler - DQ wheel base, was 2nd) 4. 12 Jerry Graves, 9 Gary Underwood, 341 Tommy Kays IMCA Modified B-Main---Top 3 to A-main 1. 49 Vince Ogle, 77 Mark Patterson, 763 Tony Keigley 2. 83 Darryl Campbell, 171 Chris Dawson, 521 Jason Borlace 3. 31 Neal DeBord, 59 Kelly Allen, 251 Dan Roberts IMCA Southern SportMods B-Main---Top 4 to A-main 1. 22 Duain Pritchett, 48 Bradley Poor, 23 Paul Martin, 4 Travis Evans 2. 5 Sam Hodges, 46 Tom Earl Jr, 11 D. Saturday nights’ winner, Scotty Brown was flanked by 2005 Southern Challenge winner, Tim Clonch for the start of the 21-car, 20 lap IMCA Modified A-main. Brown was quickly out front going into turn 1, with Clonch falling into second and David Elliott third. Bo Newton and Steve Hayes battled side by side for fifth on lap 5, as drivers tried to sort out in the field. Dan Roberts brought out the first caution with a spin on lap 2. On the restart Brown got a good jump, but a little too good for the flagman as he quickly had the yellow back out, and an introduction to the starting cone for Brown. Once back to green, David Trauernicht was looking outside Elliott for third. Trauernicht found the going tough and tried to dive back in line getting the nose clipped as he finally got to bottom line. Newton took advantage of Trauernicht’s loss of momentum and got by for fourth on lap 3. By lap 5, Brown had built a good lead on Clonch, who had a small gap back to Elliott and Newton. Newton then turned his attention to Elliott as he tried to get inside on lap 7. Coming to the mid-point the top five of Brown, Clonch, Elliott, Newton and Trauernicht had strung out slightly, while 6th-12th run nose to tail. Brown caught traffic on lap 12 giving Clonch the opportunity to close the gap slightly. With five to go, Clonch was nearly on Brown as they hit heavy traffic. Lap 16 saw yellow wave for debris(the nose of Trauernicht’s car) and set up a four lap shootout for the win. On the restart, Trauernicht again tried high on Newton for fourth. Josh McGaha tried to stick the front of his car under Trauernicht, but Trauernicht slammed the door as he dove back to the bottom. Brown had a car length on Clonch on lap 17, as the two Dallas area hot shoes scrapped it out for the win. On the last lap, Clonch took one last shot at Brown trying to duck under him in turns 3-4. At the checkers it was Brown, in the B&B Concrete, Jetman Graphics, Terry McCommas Utilities, Dirt Works Chassis holding on for the Saturday/Sunday sweep. Hogue got the point going into turn 1, with Turner trying to get inside on lap 1. Kevin Sustaire got under Gary Underwood on lap 2 for third, while Tommy Kays took fifth from Clonch. Hogue and Turner were pulling away from Sustaire on lap 4, while Clonch fought with Kays to retake the spot. Once Clonch got by Kays, he snagged another spot from Austin Janod, taking fifth on lap 6. Turner was still hanging on the bumper of Hogue on lap 7, with Sustaire a ways back and holding a good edge over Underwood and Clonch. At midway, Hogue had inched away from Turner, who had Sustaire closing on him. Clonch and Underwood rounded out the top five. Hogue ran up into traffic on lap 11 giving Turner the chance to close back in. The lead duo then caught heavy traffic, with Sustaire and Clonch now reeling them in. The caution waved on lap 15 for a spin by Travis Evans. Under green Hogue got a slight advantage and was out by two car lengths on lap 17. In the meantime Sustaire and Clonch were battling for third, with Clonch taking the spot. A bumper on the track during the final lap slowed Hogue’s chances of her first ever IMCA SportMod win. On the restart, Clonch tried to get under Turner for second giving Hogue some breathing room. Unable to get by on the bottom, Clonch then tried to run up top on the final lap. As the checkers waved, it was Hogue, a Texas state and two-time track Hobby Stock Champion, taking the victory in her first weekend of racing in the new Wicked Chassis sponsored by Coors Light, Danz Designs, Saturn & Suzuki of Abilene, Jeff Performance Automotive, Truck Accessories and Joe McCormick. “We’re looking to add some more sponsors,” said the jubilant Hogue. “They wanted to see how this weekend went. Kays and Pritchett stayed door to door in turns 1-2, but Pritchett got the “Advantage” on the back stretch as Kays started to fade quickly. Jason Christopher and Saturday nights’ winner, Josh Carpenter fell in line second and third. By lap 3, Pritchett had put a couple car lengths on Christopher, Carpenter, Fred Wojtek and Troy Attwood who were running nose to tail. By lap 5 the top eight had sorted out single file, while Chad Estes and Cary White ran side by side for ninth. Pritchett continued to hold his edge over Christopher and Carpenter, building the gap to three car lengths just before halfway. At the crossed flags it was Pritchett, Christopher, Carpenter, Wojtek and Attwood. Wojtek and Attwood began losing touch with the Carpenter, Christopher duel, while Carpenter was trying to get under Christopher for second. Christopher and Carpenter got back in line and began closing the gap on Pritchett on lap 12. In the meanwhile, Wojtek and Attwood were also catching Carpenter. The top five were nose to tail on lap 14. Pritchett then began to rebuild his lead with five to go and held off Christopher by four car lengths in the final laps. (1) Late Pass Gives Wagonblast Win The 20 lap IMCA Hobby Stock main was paced to green by Keith Buford and James Lusk. Buford was first into turn 1 with lead as Jason Bell and Paul Norman ran side by side for second. Tanner Cox moved in to make it three wide on lap 1. Lusk was looking inside for the lead on lap 2, but Cox dove lower and had the top spot on lap 3. Allen Montgomery and Mike Smith were working their way up and running door to door for fourth. Buford slipped high on lap 4 with Lusk, Montgomery, Wagonblast and Smith scrambling for positions. When it shook out, Montgomery was second, Wagonblast third and Smith fourth. Wagonblast then put the pressure on Montgomery as Cox got away from that battle. At halfway it was Cox, Montgomery, Wagonblast, Smith and Norman in the top five. Justin Shaw moved in on Lusk during lap 10 in a fight for sixth, while Rodney Sparks and Noel Jones ran door to door for eighth. Montgomery, Wagonblast and Smith all were closing on the leader Cox and caught him on lap 13. Wagonblast ducked under Montgomery on lap 14 to snare second. The top four were nose to tail with five to go as Smith looked high on Montgomery for third. Smith stayed up on the high side and got along side Wagonblast for second on lap 16. Cox then slid up the track and Wagonblast ducked in low to grab the point on lap 18. On the final lap the lead quartet got a scare when Jim Bates spun in front of them in turn 2.
