Abilene, TX (Feb 28, 2005) - Neither rain, nor mud,..........or something like that, could stop the show from going on Sunday. It’s my understanding that a late night barroom bet prompted track prep guru, Richard Snider, to prove what looked to be impossible, could be done. Mr. Snider, former Abilene owner, Tommy Simons and owner/promoter Rob Poor and crew put in more effort in a short time, than I’ve ever seen in my 30+ years of racing.
All day and half of Saturday night it rained and turned the pits into a virtual quagmire. The track itself, which drains well was never much of a concern, but getting trucks and haulers into the pits was impossible at 7:00AM. But by noon teams were filing in, occasionally with the help of a tractor. My hat’s off to all the people that gave it their all for everyone to get to race.
Bo knows Abilene Speedway
Bo Briley and Tommy Fain paced the 20 car IMCA Modified 20 lap A-main to green. Fain slipped up on the start and fell back, while in the pack Bo Newton got turned around after contact with Dusty Blake bringing out the yellow. Briley again got a good jump on green, but Dale Sudberry and B. Newton spun in turn 2 to slow the pace. The third time was the charm for Briley as he got out front for the lead and no yellow was thrown despite the field stacking up in the corner.
Former National Champion, Henry Witt moved by Allen Williams and Keith McCullough to sixth. Witt grabbed another spot getting around Danny Ford for fifth on lap 2. The top five then crept away from the two wide pack led by Ford and Williams. Robbie Edwards got turned from the middle of that pack and collected Joe Colyer and Greg Dinsmore to bring out the yellow on lap 6.
Once back to green, Witt tried to dive inside Smith on lap 7, but Smith fought back and was able to get along side Allen Colyer on lap 8. Smith took the spot on lap 9, leaving A. Colyer and Witt wheel to wheel for fourth. The yellow waved on lap 9 for a spin by Dinsmore in turns 1-2. Perennial Abilene front runner, Scotty Cook who was on a charge to the front got by Witt on the restart using the high groove, while Smith moved past Fain for second.
At the crossed flags it was Briley, Smith, Fain, A. Colyer and Cook in the top five. with Witt trying to get inside Cook. Cook and A. Colyer were side by side on lap 13, while Josh McGaha was running down Witt. Witt was able to get by A. Colyer on lap 14 to take fifth but A. Colyer came back getting along side Witt on lap 15, while Fain and Cook were rub rail to rub rail for third.
With four to go, Briley was creeping ahead of Smith, who had hopes of collecting the double feature win bonus. With two to go, Fain and Cook were still wheel to wheel for third followed by another side by side battle between Witt and A. Colyer for fifth. Smith reeled Briley in as the white flag waved, but was never able to mount a challenge as Briley took the win.

Chris Bragg got tagged by Danny Hogue and spun with Russ Reed spinning to bring out a caution on lap 3. Once back to green the top three were about to check out when Shane Priddy, Charlie Newton, Trent Crawford and Vince Ogle got tangled in turn 2.
Josh McGaha jumped outside Patterson on the restart and took the point on lap 5. Hogue worked his way back up to fourth getting by Dale Sudberry on lap 6. Patterson and PJ Egbert ran wheel to wheel for second on lap 7, with Egbert completing the pass on lap 8. The lead duo then motored away from the field and were fighting for the win on the final lap, when Egbert spun himself out in turn 4. McGaha, Patterson, Hogue and Sudberry were the first four across the line and moved on to the A-main.
IMCA Modified B-main #2
The second modified B-main saw Scotty Cook get the lead as the green waved. The field was stringing out when yellow flew on lap 3 for a spin by Tommy Phillips. Cook got a big jump on the restart, while David Chenoweth and Cory Colyer battled for the final transfer spot.
Chenoweth was given the black flag for a fuel leak and was forced to give his fourth position to C. Colyer. Cook had pulled away to big lead over Greg Dinsmore and Joe Colyer as the white was shown. Cook took the victory, with Dinsmore, J. Colyer and C. Colyer taking the last transfers.
Ewing surprise winner in SportMod melee
Tom Earl jr. got a good jump over Doyle Tennison at the start of the IMCA Southern SportMod main. Earl, Keith White and Roy Ewing broke away from Sid Kiphen and Dillon Smith on the first circuit. White looked on the high side during lap 2 and got beside Earl on lap with nearly a dead heat at the line.
White, who won Friday night, took over the lead on lap 4. Earl got back along side White running wheel to wheel on lap 5 and pulling away from Ewing. Earl eked ahead on lap 6, but White retook the top spot on lap 7. Coming to halfway White had increased his lead to four car lengths over Earl, who had gap back to Ewing, who had a better lead over Kiphen and Smith.
White was still inching away on lap 12, while Joey Patterson caught Smith for fifth. White had a scare on lap 14 when Charles Garza got loose as he was being lapped and came down in front of the leaders. This gave Earl the chance to close back in. Earl took o look low on White in turn 1 and was putting the pressure on White, who appeared to be slowing with problems.
As the two battled, this let Ewing close back in the duo with two to go. Earl got into White slightly coming out of 2 causing White to have a flat right rear. Earl got the lead on the last lap but was disqualified for the incident with White. This handed the win to Ewing in the Ashley Kellough Motorsports/Rapid Lawn Service/R&R Erectors/Country Service Center/K&S Backhoe/Speedys Racing/Greens Automatic Transmissions/Partners Horseshoe Club/Qwik Chassis

Wade wins I-Stock scramble
Phillip Houston and Billy Wade stayed door to door throughout lap 1 with Houston leading by a nose. It still looked like a two wide start back through the pack as drivers battled for positions. On lap 2, Wade was able to inch ahead at the line, but Houston came back to retake the point on lap 3. Wade was able to take over again on lap 4, with Charles Brewer getting past JD Berryhill for third. Wade completely cleared Houston on lap 5 to secure the top spot.
Former National Champion, Duain Pritchett moved into the top five on lap 6. Houston tried to retake the lead on lap 9, but Wade hung on as they reached halfway. The top five at that point were Wade, Houston, Brewer, Berryhill and D. Pritchett, with D. Pritchett slipping by Berryhill for fourth during lap 10. Rick Brown had just taken fifth from Berryhill when yellow waved for a spin by Travis Evans.
Wade, Houston and Brewer got away on the restart, but D. Pritchett quickly closed back in and was looking inside Brewer on lap 13, while Brown and Joe Colyer ran side by side for sixth. Brown got by J. Colyer and got along side Berryhill for fifth. D. Pritchett and Brewer ran door to door for third on lap 16 allowing Brown to reel them both in with two to go.
Kevin Sustaire joined the battle getting by J. Colyer on lap 18. K. Sustaire tapped Brown on the last lap sending him for a spin. In the meantime, Wade was holding off Houston and D. Pritchett to grab the checkers in his Burrus Welding/Wade Grafix IMCA stock.

Sustaire got out front this time to lead the first two circuits. Tim Pyle got by Locke and then got inside J. Sustaire to get the point on lap 3
Travis Evans worked his way up passing Locke then J. Sustaire to take over second. After a caution for a spin by Chris Wiley, Pyle and Evans checked out to battle for the win between themselves. Pyle held off Evans at the checkers, followed by J. Sustaire and Dustin McGaha in the other transfer spots.

D. Johnson gave it another try for the lead in the final laps but was unable get by. Mike Miles joined the fight for last transfer spot but both he and Benson came up short as JW Johnson, D. Johnson, Batt and Stanton made it to the feature.
Schmidt hustles to Hobby honors
Michael Hulsey beat polesitter, Nyle Godwin into turn 1 to get the lead in the 20 car IMCA Hobby Stock feature, while BJ Dauer and Godwin ran side by side for second. By lap 3 the top six had broken away from the field with Dauer looking inside Hulsey for the lead. On lap 4, Dauer and Hulsey were door to door for the lead, followed by Dustin Schmidt and Godwin side by side for third and Bill Bonnett and Terry Shearer door to door for fifth.
Fridays winner, Jerry West broke clear of the second pack that was running three wide for eighth and ran down the top six on lap 7. Dauer and Schmidt were side by side for second on lap 8, while West got by Shearer for sixth. At halfway the top five were Hulsey, Schmidt, Dauer, Bonnett and Godwin all running nose to tail.
Charles Cosper brought out the yellow on lap 11 when he lost a wheel in turn 4. Bonnett got the jump on Dauer as the green waved to snag third. Randy Embry found the turn 2 wall after suffering a flat right front to slow the action again on the restart. Schmidt put the pressure on Hulsey when green came back out and the two were door to door on lap 12. They were still tied at the door handles coming to lap 13, with Schmidt taking the lead by inches.
Dauer took advantage of the lead battle and was looking for way around both on lap 14, with Bonnett sticking the nose of his car in the fray as well. Lap 15 saw Bonnett sneak by both Dauer and Hulsey to get second, while West moved in the fifth spot. Dauer saw his chances at a top five end when he spun on lap 16 along with Brandon Holbrook.
West used the restart to get inside Hulsey and took over fourth on lap 17 when yellow waved for a spin by Pat Cross. On the restart, Bonnett took a peek inside Schmidt, but couldn't complete the pass. On the white flag lap, Bonnett got along side Schmidt but slid up the track and fell back. West gave it one last shot coming to the checkers, but it was Schmidt driving the Fairbury Foods/Schmidts Inc./Sidetrack Bar/Siebe Seamless Siding/Jet Racing/Bartells Chassis hanging on for the victory.
