San Antonio Speedway and USRA Announce Schedule Changes
San Antonio, TX (February 10, 2006) - Terry Dickerson, CEO of the United States Racing Association (USRA) Management Group, announced two important changes to the San Antonio Speedway and United States Racing Association 2006 tentative schedules today.
The first involves a location change for the USRA Season Opener originally set for Corpus Christi Motor Speedway on March 11, 2006. The event, featuring all three USRA touring series – the USRA Super Late Model Series, the USRA Modified Series and the USRA Truck Series – as well as the Texas Pro Sedans is being moved to San Antonio Speedway on the same date.
“After talking it over with (Corpus Christi Motor Speedway owner) Gregg “Doc” Godfrey, we agreed that the USRA season opener should be moved to San Antonio Speedway,” Dickerson said. “We both want the season to get off to a great start and we believe that the San Antonio venue would be more successful in terms of car and fan attendance. Due to the short time frame between our agreement being finalized and the race date, we were unable to line up the necessary sponsorships to make the event financially successful.”
“But I want everyone to know that we have secured sponsorship for the second USRA date at CCMS in August and the arrangements are very much on track,” Dickerson added. “We plan on making the August date a bigger production than we originally planned. There has been no parting of the way between Gregg and me. We simply agreed that the San Antonio venue would be logistically and financially. The USRA has some great race fans in the Corpus Christi area and we hope that they will come and enjoy the huge event we have planned for them in August at Corpus Christi Motor Speedway.”
From the logistical perspective, Dickerson also pointed out that the weather in early March is often problematic and that San Antonio is more centrally located for most of the USRA teams in case a weather-related postponement is needed.
The second change involves moving the San Antonio Speedway Opening Night for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series program. The entire racing program originally scheduled for Saturday, March 4, are being moved to Saturday, March 18, along with the long-anticipated Enduro event that will take place right after the regular racing program has taken the checkered flag.
“Several of the teams we talked to at the recent awards banquet requested that we start our season a bit later to give them a little more time to get their cars prepared for the upcoming season, “Dickerson said. “So we are moving the events back two weeks.”
The Day of Destruction - featuring a Boat Race, a Demo Derby and a Bus Race - originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, March 5, is being postponed with a new date to be announced soon. As mentioned, the 200-lap Enduro originally scheduled for the Day of Destruction is being moved to March 18, 2006, and shortened to 100 laps.
“We are in the process of finalizing a major radio promotion for our SAS opening weekend but it could not be scheduled until March 18,” Dickerson said. “Hopefully these will be the last change in our schedule, but, obviously, we have to do whatever it takes to respond to situations as they arise. We hate to make schedule changes after the schedule has already been published and I hope no one is inconvenienced too much by these changes.”
IMPORTANT NOTE: The following additional information was obtained shortly after the orginal story was released.)
Due to some unfortunate timing, an important piece of information about the recently announced switch of locations from Corpus Christi Motor Speedway to San Antonio Speedway for the big USRA Season Opener on March 11, 2006, was omitted from the original press release.
According to CCMS Owner and Promoter Gregg “Doc” Godfrey, portions of the racing surface at the famed CCMS quarter-mile oval are scheduled to be re-surfaced shortly before all three USRA touring series and the Texas Pro Sedans were scheduled to arrive for their big March 11 show.
“I was concerned that the racing surface might not have enough time to cure properly,” Godfrey said. “And, really, that’s a big part of why (USRA Owner) Terry (Dickerson) and I decided it would be a good idea to switch tracks for that event. We’re very much looking forward to hosting the USRA and TPS in August, though. That should be a great show for our Corpus Christi area fans.”
San Antonio Speedway is located 3.5 miles south of Loop 410 on Texas State Highway 16 towards Poteet. Their website is http://www.sanantoniospeedway.com.
