After three weeks of no racing, both fans and drivers were ready; the car count in the pits and the number of fans in the grandstand gave witness to the "need for speed." Over 70 race cars signed up to join the racing excitement offered by Texana Raceway Park's dirt oval. And the fans were not disappointed as the competition was fast and close.
The highlight of the evening's racing action came in the Bomber Division feature event. When the checkered flag waved to end the 20 lap event Cuero's Faith Mascorro's #12 Chevy was the winner, with Jonathan Arterberry from Victoria running a very close second. The top two cars had swapped the lead a number of times before the final lap settled the issue.
In the popular Dwarf Car Division the #3x of Frank Furia of Wallace visited Victory Lane for the 6th time in as many races. Victoria's Ken Densmam again collected top honors in the Super Stock Division, making him the "winningest driver" in that division. In the Street Stock competition it was the #78 Chevy Camaro of El Campo's Johnny Thomas returning to the winners circle. In theLate Model Division, where the fastest cars compete, it was Victoria's Kevin Migura who "Out-Handled" and "Out-Drove" the competition to rake home the top dollars. Shiner's Vince Louden managed to continue his pace setting performance, but was strongly challenged by Cuero's Aaron Hudgenons.
Guests for the evening were the Texas Super Coupes. Fourteen of vintage-appearing race cars delighted race fans with their modern machines dressed in bodies that reminded fans of what racing looked like in the late 50's and early 60' s. Winning the main event was the Vintage Modified driven by Alvin's Troy Baugh. The traveling division drew strong approval from the fans, so be on the lookout for a return engagement by the exciting "Retro Racers".
In the new and growing IMCA Modified Division it looked like Corpus Christi night at the races. The top three finishers in the feature event all reside in Corpus. Finishing first was Steve Whitteker, followed by Dale Flanagan and Bobby Grobe.
Look for the action of dirt track racing to return to Texana Raceway Park on Saturday, August 13th. The track is located 2 miles southeast of Edna State Highway 111
