13-year-old upstart Dillon Spreen registers top-10 in first TSRS start
(Austin, TX) The premier late-model series in Texas cranked up for its season opener this past Saturday (April 19) at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX), a 3/8th-mile asphalt oval, and 13-year-old Dillon Spreen certainly made his mark.
Spreen, a student at Boerne (TX) Middle School South, drove his South Bay/Spreen Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo to a top-10 finish in the Allstate Texas Thunder 50.
“It was great to start my first race, because my dad (Greg) and I worked very hard for over a year building this car and I just wanted to get out there and race,” the 13-year-old Boerne resident stated. “I didn't feel nervous running in my first late model race because I’ve been racing at THR for three years now and I know almost everyone.”
Spreen added, “I never expected to get a top-10 finish in my first (series) race. My goal for this race was just to finish. But a top-10 finish is awesome! As a team (Spreen Racing Team) just wanted to bring the car home in one piece so we can race again. We are taking each race one at a time.”
The youngster talked about the format of the race on Saturday. “The 50-lap race with a 30-minute limit was a little short for me. I was just getting comfortable and warmed up. I think all the TSRS officials are great and all of us had a great time at Thunderhill (Raceway).”
Greg Spreen, Dillon's father, added that even though Dillon is only 13, he has spent hundreds of hours working on the car for the ‘08 season. “He fully understands what all TSRS teams go through preparing for each race. Dillon does not want to wreck his car or anybody else because he knows and understands what it takes to do this the right way. Always remember that to finish first, first you have to finish.”
The series resumes racing this coming Saturday. “I’m glad we’re racing this weekend because the car is ready to go and we worked on the chassis set up. So I hope to qualify a little better than last week.”
Greg and Cherie Spreen added that without their team sponsors this season would not be possible for Dillon. Those sponsors include South Bay Real Estate Development, NAPA Auto Care Center of Boerne, Spreen Racing Engines, AT&T Real Yellow Pages, Mill's Carbs, Lester's Automotive Center of Boerne, Swenson Racing Chassis, Oval Components, Screen Pro Graphics and Simpson Race Products.
