Thunderhill Raceway updates Enduro 200 rules
KYLE, TX (January 20, 2008) – Hoping to create a bigger field and guarantee a $10,000-to-win purse, Thunderhill Raceway (THR) officials announced a major rule change to the upcoming 1st Annual El Zorro Enduro 200 to be run at the Kyle, TX track.
The 1st Annual El Zorro Enduro 200 is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. Grandstand gates will open at 1 p.m. at the 3/8-mile, D-shaped asphalt oval.
Mary Ann Naumann, THR Owner/Promoter, announced that an adjustment is being made to the current rules related to the cars and bodies allowed to participate. This change is an attempt to increase the interest in the entries for the Enduro 200. Naumann and THR officials are trying to ensure there are at least 100 entries – thus triggering a clause that would guarantee a $10,000-to-win race purse.
“I’m one of the first to say, ‘if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it,’” said Naumann. “However, it’s already well into January, and we only have 15 entries so far. So, it looks like now is the time to make an attempt to fix the Enduro rules.”
The previous set of rules had specified a wheelbase of no less than 110 inches. The rules have been amended to allow a metric 108-inch wheelbase, as follows:
CAR AND BODY: Any 1960 or newer car is eligible, 8 cylinder engines only. Wheelbase – any 110” or metric 108” wheelbase. No full-sized pick-ups, Camaros, Firebirds, sports cars, four wheel drives, jeep-type vehicles (S-10, Blazer, Ranger, Nissan, Toyota, etc.), with the exception of El Caminos and Rancheros. The vehicle model, make and engine may be verified by the VIN plate. The VIN tag must be in the factory place and may not be removed, relocated (moved) nor altered in any way
“Our fans are very important to us, and they deserve to see an exciting Enduro race with lots of cars,” Naumann stated. “After much discussion, we feel opening up the rules just a bit will really boost interest in this race, especially since it’s our goal to have at least 100 cars. Above all, we want this race to be fun for both the drivers and the fans – while generating some good revenue and interest in THR as it kicks off an exciting ‘08 season!”
“While making this decision, we’ve had several discussions among Jack Sandefur (THR technical director) and most of the drivers who have already registered for the Enduro,” added Naumann. “Although everyone may not have totally agreed with this decision, they were very supportive of our desire make changes towards a successful event. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s input and support.”
The cars competing in the Enduro will be allowed minimum modifications for safety purposes only. With the possibility of a large cash payout going to the winner, the technical requirements rules will be strictly enforced. THR officials will focus on safety issues in the pre-race inspections – while technical compliance will be stressed in the post-race inspections.
This 200-lap Enduro race promises to be an exciting event. The red flag will not be used, except for fire emergencies and/or endangerment to a driver. Drivers will have to maneuver around stalled cars on the track, hazardous track conditions, etc., to battle for the lead.
Thunderhill Raceway has no plans to change the Grand Stock rules that have already been posted for 2008. A 110” wheelbase car is required to enter the Grand Stock class.
